The Papillon’s cute structure conceals one of the smartest dog breeds ever known. It is considered one of the oldest purebred toy dogs. During the 16th and 17th centuries, they were known as “Dwarf Spaniels” and “Toy Spaniels”. In the past, only royalty and aristocrats owned Papillons. They possess a keen sense of hearing which makes them excellent watch dogs and hearing ear dogs for the deaf and hearing impaired. Their fringed ears also led some people to call them the “Butterfly Dog” because their ears appeared as outspread wings of the butterfly. Papillons can easily be trained. In fact, it is considered one of the top five breeds in obedience and agility trials. They are most happy around people and show great enthusiasm for children and other pets in the household.
